Teenagers are giving up on Facebook for this social platform, study
When asked which platform they use most often, 35% of teens said Snapchat, whose parent is Snap (SNAP).
Also as smartphone access has become more prevalent, a growing share of teens now report using the internet on a near-constant basis.
The survey discovered that 50 percent of female users said they were always online compared with 39 percent of male users.
In the survey, 45 percent of teens believe that social networks neither have a positive nor negative impact on their lives.
The Pew survey of US teens was conducted March 7-April 10.
Facebook is rapidly losing ground against rival internet platforms in attracting and keeping US teenagers, a survey showed.
Others who found social media harmful cited the potential for online bullying, spreading of false information and addiction.
“This shift in teens’ social media use is just one example of how the technology landscape for young people has evolved since the Center’s last survey of teens and technology use in 2014-2015”, Jingjing Jiang and Monica Anderson said in a blog post.
Still, most teens prioritize YouTube, Snapchat, and Instagram over Facebook. Just seven percent said that they use the popular social news aggregation site Reddit.
It was a 20 percent jump for Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, and a 28 percent pop for Snapchat. Furthermore, teens from lower income households notably gravitate towards Facebook more than those from higher-income homes, just like the former survey. Pew reports that 95 percent of teens can get their hands on such a device these days – a 22 percent surge from 2014-15.
Meanwhile, as per the effects of social media on their lives, nearly a third of those surveyed said that the effect was mostly positive, while a quarter said it was mostly negative.
Those data, combined with decreasing user numbers overall, can be problematic to a social platform hoping to woo more marketers to spend money to appeal to younger consumers-especially those with more disposable income. “Today, their habits revolve less around a single platform”.
Interestingly 85% of the respondents say that they use Youtube most often while 72% say they use Instagram.
– A large majority of teens – both boys and girls – play video games.
