Apple Unveils iOS 12 at the WWDC. Here’s What’s New
To more cheers from developers, Apple also announced a redesigned Mac App Store for the Mojave update, expanding a new look the company introduced to iPhones and iPads previous year. It’ll now begin looking for relevant photos before you’ve completed your search query, and it’ll make improved search suggestions as you try to nail down the specific image you’re looking for.
■ The company also plans to preview iOS 12, the new version of the iPhone and iPad operating system, including bug fixes and other improvements. And when you use “do not disturb” during bed time, your iPhone shows a mostly black screen until you tap the screen in the morning to dive in.
The real meat and bones of Apple’s phone addiction features is what they’re calling ScreenTime, which comes with a whole host of features, including “Reports”. “We’re also excited to join the Mac App Store with its new redesign that not only makes it easy for users to find apps like Lightroom CC, but also further showcases the great work of creators and developers”.
For You: a new personalized feed that will suggest effects, featured albums, pictures you might want to look at, sharing suggestions (based on face detection) and your friends can share back photos of you, too.
A new app called “Screen Time” will offer iPhone and iPad users a dashboard highlighting how much time they have spent using which apps, how many notifications they receive, how often they pick up their device and how their usage patterns compare to the average.
Apple is ready to open up its near-field communication chips in its iPhones and smart watches to allow more than just Apple Pay transactions, according to a recent report.
Apple also announced ARKit 2 for developing more immersive AR experiences, including shared experiences. Apps can now be programed to extend their functionality into Siri so that you can issue voice commands related to them. Time limits for particular apps will also be available to users, and parents can set those time limits for their children. Of course, they could always just increase the time limit, so they’ll need to rely on at least a little willpower to adhere to whatever limits they set for themselves. In fact, iOS 12 uses several techniques to boost performance to ensure everything is nice and ticking whenever you require it.
Apple is building on Animoji by introducing Memoji. New characters incoming include a ghost, koala, tiger and T-rex. You can also customize your memoji to ensure it looks similar to you. Messages’ camera also has a bunch of Snapchat-like features, including stickers and shapes you can add to your photos.
Apple has also introduced the ability to make group FaceTime calls.
Group FaceTime is finally here and it supports 32 participants in one call, beating both Skype and Hangouts which max out at 25. Does the next version of macOS pack any exciting and innovative features?
“Are you merging iOS and MacOS?” a slide asked.
In providing such a digital shield, Apple could increase its appeal to privacy-sensitive consumers and businesses, says Carlo Cadet, director of product marketing at mobile-quality assurance company Perfecto.
Probably the most obvious example is a new Apple app called Measure, which uses augmented reality to let you measure the sizes of things in real life.
