Trump Commutes Sentence of Alice Marie Johnson After Request From Kim Kardashian

The 62-year-old great-grandma’s case became national news last year when Kim tweeted about it – she was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1997 on money laundering and drug conspiracy charges … her first offense.

Her release came after Trump commuted her life sentence on Wednesday, one week after Kardashian pleaded her case during an Oval Office meeting with the President.

Immediately after announcing the news, Kardashian again went on Twitter, vowing to help others in the same way she helped Johnson.

The official said the Justice Department denied her petition because prosecutors maintain Johnson was involved in a drug cartel that was connected to violence and crime. She had already served nearly 22 years.

Today President Trump granted clemency to Johnson, 63, commuting her life sentence. She is expected to be released soon.

Michael Scholl, a member of Johnson’s legal team, said she was released just before 6 p.m. from federal prison in Aliceville, Alabama.

She celebrated the good news on Wednesday, tweeting a link about the pardon and writing: “BEST NEWS EVER!” alongside three praying hand emojis.

Trump has taken a much different approach to presidential pardon power than his predecessor.
