JSO cancels Amber Alert, says Ruben Ebron killed Lonzie Barton; releases video
Authorities announced late Monday the Amber Alert for 21-month-old Lonzie Barton is canceled and they are 100 percent sure the toddler who disappeared 10 days ago was killed by mother’s boyfriend.
Police have said that the surveillance video below disproves Ebron’s story.
“It’s kind of heartbreaking because it seems like to me they’re starting to give up on trying to find him”, said David Hackney, who says he has known Lonzie’s family for decades. As many as 200 investigators were out scouring the Southside and Northside last week, but those efforts were scaled back to about 70 investigators over the weekend. Ebron initially told police he had left Lonzie in the vehicle with its engine running while Ebron went into the apartment, and the auto was gone when he returned, authorities said.
Fifteen to 20 minutes later, police had located the orange 1995 Honda Civic just four blocks away. “His whole story explanation is nothing but a load of lies”, Hackney said. Hackney said he hopes Ebron learns of the surveillance video’s existence.
Hackney said, “I want the child’s body”. The 32-year-old was arrested later that day on two counts of child neglect. “I want them to let him know what we got”. I have reasons to do that”, Hackney said, adding a comment directed to the suspect: “Ruben, you are building this house of cards with losing hand.
“I’m going to hold my thoughts about Ebron to myself”, Williams said.
The sheriff’s office has led a massive search of the Jacksonville area since Lonzie’s disappearance, leading to the recovery of two unrelated sets of human remains.
