Bill Nelson, Rick Scott spar over shortened Senate recess
Republicans have hit Democrats for their “obstruction” of Donald Trump’s nominees in the past.
Trump gave no indication Wednesday he would soften his stance.
Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., said it’s too early to say whether the House would take up Corker’s proposal.
Corker said that he listened, but declined to drop the push.
The bills are usually combined into one omnibus bill, but it rarely gets passed by the deadline. “I have recognized Senator Krueger to be able to speak on this issue”, Hochul told lawmakers.
U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell is playing hardball.
On Wednesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., dismissed the idea of legislation blocking the tariffs, telling reporters that Congress would need to come up with legislation that Trump would sign.
It’s a longshot legislative strategy, but the group is working quickly to try to produce an amendment in time for an upcoming debate on a separate defense bill.
As for his decision to cancel the Senate’s traditional August recess, McConnell blamed Democrats.
“He regards himself as a free trader. We want to see the President succeed”, said Sen.
But the president’s pressure campaign appears to be having an impact on a party that has traditionally been opposed to trade barriers.
“I don’t think there’s anybody on our side of the aisle that doesn’t understand that the 232 authority is being greatly abused”, Corker said, addressing reporters. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and others who have been meeting privately – and with Democrats – would be narrowly crafted legislation requiring congressional approval of the tariffs Trump has imposed in the name of national security.
South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham, said in a statement afterward that, “Now is not the time to undercut President Trump’s ability to negotiate better trade deals”. Great, maybe the Democrats will finally get something done other than their acceptance of High Crime and High Taxes.
Trump sparked backlash among congressional Republicans after the administration announced late last week that they were slapping steep tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from the European Union, Canada and Mexico, ending temporary exemptions for the key trading allies.
Sen. Lamar Alexander has is also supporting the bill.
“If the Democrats can’t win both in NY and, say, the Great Plains, we’ll never be the majority”, he said. “I can handle anything, and people know that”. “And I’m not going to apologize for it”.
In contrary to those who wanted the summer recess, Senator David Perdue (R-GA) said that his party, and indeed the Senate at-large, should take this time and be more productive.
He characterized it as a “heartfelt conversation”.
“We now have confirmed 21 circuit court judges in the first year and a half of the Trump administration, breaking all modern records”, the majority leader said. Corker acknowledges that it’s “like moving boulders”.
Joining Corker in introducing the plan was Democratic Sen.
Republicans are also eager to approve as many of Trump’s nominations and as many bills as possible to show voters that the GOP-run government can produce results.
