Amid tensions, all G-7 members sign statement

President Trump proposed a major shakeup of the world’s economic order during a summit in Canada this week, suggesting the world’s big economies drop all tariffs and market-distoring subsidies and go to a fully free system of trade.

He left the summit early to travel to Singapore for a landmark meeting with the North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to try to persuade him to give up the country’s nuclear weapons.

It was not immediately clear where the new round of aggression would leave the two leaders and their mercurial attempts to find trade peace.

Trump says he has not spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a while. Canada is strongly of the opposite view, with Trudeau calling that rationale “insulting” since Canada and the US are so integrated on continental defence and security issues. Canada and Mexico, the other members of the 1994 pact, have been frustrated by the slow pace of talks to renegotiate NAFTA.

“We’re not going to be able to do that work under the threat of tariffs”. Right now, we are not going to live with the deals the way they are.

That move was met with criticism at home, including from Republicans, and announcements of retaliatory tariffs from US allies.

What else did Trump have to say? “Or we’ll stop trading with them”. Canada is focused on maintaining a trilateral pact, the official said.

Trump headed into the Group of Seven talks in Canada having picked fights with some of his biggest allies, who vowed to confront him about new United States tariffs on steel and aluminium.

Most recently, Trump pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear agreement, following his earlier decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord.

“Ultimatums are not enough for the G20, one needs to make agreements there”. Then he pulled the USA out of the Paris accord the following week. He also blamed former US President Barack Obama for Russia’s move into that nation.

In their communique, the leaders of the US, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan agreed on the need for “free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade” and the importance of fighting protectionism.

“We’re like the piggy bank that everybody is robbing, and that ends”, said Trump. “I’m not looking to play that game”.
