Defector explains what North Koreans don’t know about the world
“On the North Korean side, a meeting with a sitting USA president is in itself a victory for Kim Jong-un, as previous US administrations have always held back this diplomatic concession”.
Donald Trump said his summit with Kim Jong Un represented “a one-time” chance to forge peace between the USA and North Korea as he prepared to fly Saturday to the venue in Singapore.
Yet both Kim and Trump have come too far to risk any failure from the summit, and Kim’s boldness and Trump’s disposition as a dealmaker may come together to produce a surprising result, the former officials said. Accompanying him was Kim Yong Chol, who earlier this month met with President Trump to hand deliver a letter from Kim.
After his remarks, Trump headed to the Canadian air base at Bagotville by helicopter before boarding Air Force One and setting off for Singapore, where he was scheduled to arrive late Sunday.
North Korean forces invaded the South in 1950 and the ensuing war saw USA -led United Nations troops backing Seoul fight their way to a stalemate against Pyongyang’s forces – which were aided by Russian Federation and China – before the conflict ended in stalemate and an armistice which sealed the division of the peninsula.
Bolton’s hardline rhetoric last month infuriated North Korea and almost derailed the summit.
Although they are wary of rushing into an unpredictable political situation, South Korean businesses representatives and North Korea experts gathered at a conference in Seoul on Thursday to discuss potential inter-Korean cooperation. The leaders announce aspirational goals of a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula and permanent peace. The Kim dynasty is also one of the worst human rights abusers on the planet, with a decades-long history of brutalizing its people.
For Kim, almost 40 years Trump’s junior and representing the third generation of North Korea’s ruling dynasty, the summit affords both him and his long-isolated country the global legitimacy his father and grandfather could only dream of. “The world is looking and we can feel proud to be part of it”. A peace treaty, however, would raise North Korea’s long-time demand for a reduction or withdrawal of US troops in South Korea.
Mr Trump’s first year in office was marked by bitter exchanges with Mr Kim as North Korea conducted several ballistic missile tests in defiance of worldwide warnings. The North says it will not be unilaterally pressured into abandoning its nuclear programme. Trump is expected to hold talks with Lee on Monday. “I think that’s a long process but this is a first step which happens in Singapore and well, we are happy to be associated with it”, he said.
“But I’ve said it many times, who knows?”

Any nuclear deal will hinge on North Korea’s willingness to allow unfettered outside inspections of the country’s warheads and nuclear fuel, much of which is likely kept in a vast complex of underground facilities. Mr Moon calls Mr Trump’s move to cancel the summit “very perplexing” and says Washington and Pyongyang should get the talks back on track.
Kim said he would instead put all efforts into jumpstarting economic growth for his country of more than 25 million people. Mr Moon says Mr Kim reaffirmed his commitment to denuclearise their peninsula but also said he was unsure whether he could trust the United States to provide a credible security guarantee in return.
The embassy and establishing official relations with North Korea are among the topics to be covered during the Singapore summit with the two leaders on Tuesday.
Representative Peter T. King, Republican of NY, called the episode a “warning shot to Kim Jong-un” in keeping with Mr. Trump’s approach to negotiations.
