Republican SC governor voting results

Incumbent Republican Congressman Mark Sanford lost in the SC primary race to challenger Katie Arrington on Tuesday, after President Trump made an election-day social media move to hit out at Sanford and endorse Arrington in the race.

“He is MIA and nothing but trouble”, Trump tweeted, adding, “He is better off in Argentina”. “He is better off in Argentina”.

With 98% of the vote counted, USA media called the race for state representative Katie Arrington, who led Sanford by 50.5% to 46.5%.

Arrington, who made a campaign issue of Sanford’s criticism of Trump, won 50.6 percent of the vote to Sanford’s 46.5 percent with nearly all ballots counted. But as Sanford spoke, the race was still too close to call.

“They’ll say it as if it’s an evil word-like “you’re a communist” or something”, Sanford said in 2009 when he was labeled a “libertarian” by Sen.

Within minutes, the Arrington campaign was also blasting out a robocall touting Trump’s endorsement and encouraging voters to “get out and vote, even in the rain”.

This caused Scarborough to muse that the Republican Party no longer reflects traditional conservatism, so he wondered what will happen to people who still hold onto that kind of political thinking.

In Democratic primaries – particularly three key House races in Virginia – the theme of this spring’s primaries continued: Female candidates are winning at unprecedented rates and often by large margins. In Virginia, a Republican known for his ardent defence of Confederate symbolism, Corey Stewart, won the Republican primary to face Democratic Sen.

On the Democratic side, voters also face a choice between political experience and newcomer perspective.

AP also projects Charleston attorney Joe Cunningham will be the Democratic nominee in the 1st District. Trump’s popularity with Republican primary voters has been enough to drive other intra-GOP Trump antagonists, like Arizona Sen.

The Senate landscape will become more settled Tuesday night as well. None of the three Senate candidates appears to match that region. One is Sen Heidi Heitkamp’s seat in North Dakota.

In North Dakota, GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer is a shoo-in to face moderate Democratic Sen.

Arrington endorsed Senator Marco Rubio in the 2016 contest and said she was following the lead of the state’s governor at the time, Nikki Haley.

Meanwhile, the state’s Governor, Henry McMaster, will face-off against fellow Republican John Warren in a special runoff election later this month, after McMaster failed to secure more than half of the majority vote. If he fails to top 50%, it would catapult him into a one-on-one runoff. Former Rep. Cresent Hardy is the Republican frontrunner in a six-person race, while former Rep. Steven Horsford is expect to win the Democratic nomination after incumbent Ruben Kihuen announced he wouldn’t seek reelection in response to sexual misconduct allegations.

Interest in the race pushed voter turnout by Tuesday afternoon to a higher level than the 2016 Nevada primary, according to Nevada Deputy Secretary of State for Elections Wayne Thorley.

Republican Attorney Gen. Adam Laxalt is expected to easily clear the GOP field.
