Singapore Offers to Pick up Kim Jong-un’s Bills
The president would not elaborate on these hazy measures of time.
“In coordination with our ROK [South Korean] partners, we will continue with our current military posture until we receive updated guidance from the Department of Defense and/or Indo-Pacific Command”, the U.S. Forces-Korea statement said.
On the issue the world has been most fixated on – North Korea’s pursuit of a nuclear arsenal meant to target the entire USA mainland – Trump and Kim signed a joint statement that contained a repeat of past vows to work toward a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.
North Korean state media lauded the summit as a resounding success, highlighting concessions made by the USA president.
Best case scenario is the two sides start talking, North Korea decides the U.S.is no longer a threat and scales back its arsenal.
At the summit, Trump emphasized what North Korea has to gain by giving up its nuclear weapons and rejoining the global community – a subject he returned to on Twitter.
Pompeo said Wednesday that Trump “made it very clear that the condition precedent for the exercises not to proceed was productive, good-faith negotiations being ongoing”. He did not elaborate on the timeline, but suggested it wouldn’t be soon, saying, “They’ll come off when we know we’re down the road”.
For weeks, Pompeo and other officials have insisted North Korea must agree to “complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization” before economic sanctions can be lifted.
The likelihood of Kim Jong Un launching a first strike against the US, thereby bringing on “fire and fury”, was low.
According to the Pentagon, about 28,500 US troops are stationed in South Korea.
“While I am glad the president and Kim Jong Un were able to meet, it is hard to determine what of concrete nature has occurred”, Corker said in a statement.
When asked what he expected when he first visited North Korea, Rodman said he was surprised by how much he liked it.
Ultimately, that may end up being the only option that the United States has short of war.
“At this moment, we need to figure out President Trump’s accurate meaning and intention” on the exercises, said a statement from the office of South Korean President Moon Jae-in, CNN reported.
US Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said Mr Trump’s cost reasoning for halting the exercises was “ridiculous”. Then Trump “expressing his understanding of it”, said he intends to end this “provocation”.
“I think over the weeks that they spent with us, they gained greater confidence that we are sort of no-nonsense but efficient people”, he said.
At their meeting in Singapore, Mr. Kim pledged the “complete denuclearization” of the Korean Peninsula, although the agreement lacks details of how that could be achieved.
Trump’s chest-thumping tweets seemed reminiscent of the “Mission Accomplished” banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the USA invasion of Iraq. A flurry of media coverage the day Kim arrived in Singapore showed him waving from the door of the specially chartered Air China flight that brought him from Pyongyang. “They did not record it”.
Both Seoul and U.S. military commanders in the South indicated they had no idea the announcement was coming. Are there recordings of it?
