White House: No call between US, North Korea this weekend
The US leader raised eyebrows by describing the exercises as “provocative” – a term used by the North.
The posts came as South Korean news outlet Yonhap News Agency reported that the United States and South Korea would announce a halt to the large-scale joint military drills that are scheduled for August.
In a Q&A session last Friday, Trump talked about stopping annual joint military exercises with South Korea.
Seoul, which has tens of thousands of United States troops on its soil to help protect it from its hostile northern neighbour, said the suspension would affect the large-scale Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercises slated for August. “Nothing has yet been decided, and it is still in discussion”.

Warming ties between North Korea and South Korea come as relations between North Korea and the United States have also improved after tension past year over the North’s nuclear and missile programs.
Mr Trump’s announcement appeared to catch South Korea off guard and there was confusion how it would be implemented.
Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un last week in Singapore.
The president has suggested strongly that the meeting with Kim ensured that North Korea was no longer a threat.
Richard N. Haass, the president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said, “A consistent theme of the Trump administration has been to downgrade the value of allies and alliances”.
North Korea holds a massive artillery drill.

Officials in Washington and Seoul confirmed on Tuesday that planning for that drill had been suspended.
The reclusive state spends almost a quarter of its GDP on its military, according to the U.S. State Department.
Previously Beijing has waited for him to leave the country before confirming his visits.

“Through close discussions with the United States, [the two countries] chose to suspend all of the planned activities regarding Freedom Guardian military drills”, the South Korean Defence Ministry said in a statement. It has agreed to discuss denuclearization and to close a nuclear test area.
The North’s brief mention of sanctions did not include a timeline for the easing of sanctions. It also involves agreeing to destroy all its nuclear weapons, accepting limits on ballistic missiles and other threatening weapons and destroying its weapons of mass destruction.
Sports officials from two countries also agreed in talks at a border village to field combined teams in some unspecified events at the Asian Games, which begin in August, South Korea’s Sports Ministry said in a statement.
