Melania Trump ‘hates’ to see children separated from families at U.S. border
A top White House adviser on Sunday attempted to distance the administration from responsibility for separating migrant children from their parents at the US-Mexico border, even though the administration put in place and could easily end a policy that has led to a spike in cases of split and distraught families.
“The former Democratic presidential candidate also called out Attorney General Jeff Sessions for using a Bible passage to defend the harsh immigration policy”. But no law requires families to necessarily be separated at the border.
Nielsen continued: “For those seeking asylum at ports of entry, we have continued the policy from previous Administrations and will only separate if the child is in danger, there is no custodial relationship between “family” members, or if the adult has broken a law”.
Part of the policy has been separating children from their parents who are detained.
Online videos showed immigrant children being held in concrete-floored cages at detention centers.
In the audio clips – accessed by non-profit news platform ProPublica from a Customs and Border Protection facility – Central American children, estimated to be between 4 and 10 years old, are heard sobbing and asking for their “Mami” and “Papi”. Reuters could not independently verify its authenticity.
She’s right about one thing, though, the president does get his news from TV, and Fox News is his favourite. We need a wall. “And they could be murderers and thieves and so much else”, he said.
“This is a particularly cruel policy, where frightened children are being ripped from their parent’s arms and taken to overflowing detention centres, which are effectively cages”, she said. “Yet the president and his administration continue to perpetuate falsehoods and blame others for their own cruelty”.
“If they come to the table instead of playing politics we can do it very quickly”, Trump said.
Administration officials said they do not like the family separations either – calling it the result of legal loopholes – but insist migrants who arrive illegally simply won’t be released or loosely kept track of.
On Twitter, Trump addressed what he specifically wants in new legislation including “full funding for the Wall;” an end to a diversity visa lottery and certain categories of family-based migration; and a shift toward “merit based immigration” for skilled workers.
“The United States will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility”, Trump declared.
The regular White House briefing was delayed several times Monday amid the furor as officials huddled with Trump in the West Wing. There is no clear procedure for family reunification.
Trump blamed Democrats for the problem.
The Trump administration says that approach has become a magnet for anyone wanting to enter the United States.
“All Americans are rightly horrified by the images we are seeing on the news, children in tears pulled away from their mothers and fathers”. This must stop. Now. “Let’s solve it”, Nielsen said.
The House is expected to vote on Wednesday on an immigration bill pushed by conservatives that may not have enough support to pass, but there is also a compromise measure that includes key proposals supported by the president.
