Melania Trump Visits Texas Border to Meet With Immigrant Kids
US lawmakers were poised to vote Thursday on long-term Republican-sponsored fixes to immigration amid a firestorm over family separations on the US-Mexico border.
The move does little to suggest that the bill will pass.
Business and religious leaders, four former USA first ladies and Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, also voiced sharp criticism of the policy to split up migrant families, many of them escaping poverty and turmoil in Central America, as they illegally crossed the us border.

Immigrants in handcuffs and ankle chains arrive at the Federal Courthouse for hearings, Thursday, June 21, 2018, in McAllen, Texas. They have encountered persistent GOP divisions that have long prevented Republicans from tackling a broad immigration bill.
The department also found it can take up to three to four weeks to re-establish contact between separated children and their parents.
Ken Wolfe was speaking for the Administration of Children and Families (ACF), which oversees where children are placed after they are separated from their parents.
The U.S. leader contended that the mainstream U.S. news outlets are “not mentioning the safety and security of our country when talking about illegal immigration”.
“When a outcome is applied, it makes a difference on recidivism and illegal activity at the border”, the official said.
Davis said the temporary assignments are to last for 179 days.
Liberal legislators downplayed President Trump’s executive order on “family separations” this week; saying the action doesn’t go far enough and issuing new demands regarding detained asylum seekers along the US-Mexico border.
Trump then accused rival Democrats of putting “illegal immigrants before they put American citizens”.
The House will also vote on a more hard-line immigration proposal favoured by conservatives.
The conservative measure’s 231-193 defeat set the stage for debate on the second bill, this one crafted by Republican leaders in hopes of finding an accord between the party’s sparring moderate and conservative wings.
Trump tweeted earlier that any such legislation is all but doomed in the narrowly-divided Senate. “Republicans must get rid of the stupid Filibuster Rule-it is killing you!”
Back in the House, despite Trump’s endorsement of the compromise bill, Ryan’s leadership team has been struggling to ensure passage on its own.
Both House bills, backed by Trump but opposed by Democrats and immigration advocacy groups, would fund the wall Trump has proposed along the US border with Mexico and reduce legal migration, in part by denying visas for some relatives of USA residents and citizens living overseas.
The House defeated the measure by a vote of 231-193 as a group of Republicans joined Democrats to sink the plan.
Mr Trump said his daughter Ivanka and Melania have strong views on the policy.
He wrote: “At some point Schumer and Pelosi, who are weak on Crime and Border security, will be forced to do a real deal, so easy, that solves this long time problem. Schumer used to want Border security – now he’ll take Crime!” Voting that had been expected Thursday now would be held Friday instead. But officials gave differing accounts as to whether those beds would be for children or for entire families. “We need Congress to act”.
