Maryland shooting: Capital-Gazette owner ‘deeply saddened’
Police secure the scene of a shooting at the building housing The Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Md., Thursday, June 28, 2018.
Authorities say Ramos, who was apprehended, used a shotgun and smoke or flash-bang grenades in the attack.
FIVE people have died in a shooting at a newspaper office in the state of Maryland in the United States.
Thomas Marquardt, the Capital Gazette’s former editor and publisher, was very concerned about alleged shooter Jarrod Ramos, after Ramos filed a lawsuit against Marquardt and started harassing the paper’s staff.
“The shooter is in custody and is being interrogated at this time”, city spokesman Steve Schuh said.
NY police sent counterterrorism teams to news organizations around the city in a move authorities said was a precaution, not prompted by any specific threat. The threats “indicated violence”.
“We’re trying to confirm what account that was and we’re trying to confirm who sent them”, he said.
On TV reports, people could be seen leaving the building with their hands up, as police officers urged them to depart through a parking lot and officers converged on the building. Police confirmed Jarrod Ramos, who made a defamation claim in court against the newspaper in 2012, was the shooter.
Sentenced to 18 months supervised probation and forced therapy, he took issue with the way the U.S. paper covered his case.
“We do have injuries. but we don’t expect this.to have major casualties”, Lt. Rayn Frashure with the Anne Arundel County Police said. That item was “taken care of”. Local news outlets have begun to report that the building is clear, though this has not been confirmed.
This incident follows similar mass shootings in Parkland, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada, Santa Fe, Texas, and many others. Police did not immediately respond to requests for further information.
Five people were killed Thursday in a shooting at the Capital Gazette building in Annapolis, Maryland, said acting Anne Arundel County police chief Bill Kramph.
Ramos, who is charged with five counts of murder, in one of the deadliest attacks on journalists in U.S. history, was denied bail Friday.
“He was the most remarkable person”.
Another update was expected at 8 p.m.
Police held a final press conference on the shooting on Friday and revealed the Capital Gazette met with lawyers and police in 2013 to discuss if they should press charges against Ramos, who had posted threats on social media aimed at the paper.
