No charges for 2 officers at scene of traffic stop shooting
More universities are adding officers and arming them, insisting they can better police and protect students than municipal officers.
“We’re getting pushed to ignore those imaginary lines on the map”, Jeff Corcoran, then the interim chief of the University of Cincinnati police, told The Associated Press in an interview previous year.
According to the Hamilton County Clerk of Courts, Tensing was released from the jail later Thursday, and will appear in court on August 19.
Video from the body cameras of Lindenschmidt and Kidd, and a written police report illustrated the confusion and tensions in the seconds after DuBose was shot. He called the shooting “the most asinine act” he had ever seen a police officer make and “totally unwarranted”.
Maj. Charmaine McGuffey, of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, said Tensing left the jail at about 6:45 p.m. He’d been under suicide watch during his time behind bars, she said. He spoke Thursday outside the Hamilton County courtroom where a judge set $1 million bond for Ray Tensing. The outburst prompted a strong rebuke from the judge.
University of Cincinnati Police Officer Ray Tensing was indicted for purposely causing the death of Sam Dubose during a July 19 traffic stop. Prosecutors have said Tensing was not dragged and Tensing’s own body camera video doesn’t show any dragging.
Mathews said Tensing is “not doing well” and “feels bad about” the shooting.
Tensing had been a police officer for four years before he was fired by the University of Cincinnati. He also had earned a UC degree in criminal justice.
Terina Allen, sister of Samuel DuBose, sits with family members in the court yesterday.
Those who defend and protect people such as Ray Tensing, Eric Weibel and Phillip Kidd must understand they are complicit in the death of Black bodies. Authorities so far have not focused on race in DuBose’s death.
Kidd and Lindenschmidt were put on administrative leave this week during a university investigation.
One account: Tensing was in a life-threatening situation, being dragged alongside DuBose’s moving auto, firing his weapon in self-defense.
Later in the same video, Tensing repeats the claim, saying, “I got my hand and my arm caught inside [the car]”. But there is no indication on the video of how he ended up on the ground.
That as the University of Findlay moves toward creating its own police department, staffed with certified peace officers who will have full police powers. No telephone listing for Kidd could be found.
But the university said it stands by its decision.
“You need to have a knowledge of how to interact with students. I might not bail him out if he was my own son”. Mr DuBose held up what appears to be a bottle of gin. The same report notes that Officer Kidd claimed he saw Tensing being dragged and saw him fire a single shot.
Tensing fired once, striking DuBose in the head. And this is not the first time the duo have been involved in the death of an unarmed black man. According to the Guardian, in 2010 they were involved in another police brutality case. Video footage shows the officer asking repeatedly for a driver’s licence before trying to open the vehicle door. “This is, in the vernacular, a pretty chicken crap stop”.
“It was so unnecessary”, Deters said.
