Roger Federer loses five-set match to Kevin Anderson
He equalled his own record of winning 34 consecutive sets at SW19 by taking the the first two against Anderson.
Federer suffered one of the most stunning defeats of his career on Wednesday (July 11), blowing a two-set lead and wasting a match point in a 2-6, 6-7 (5/7), 7-5, 6-4, 13-11 loss. “I nearly could have”. Is it getting broken at 5-5 after that? They might as well have engraved his name right then.
Mannarino had returned a long Federer backhand and the Swiss maestro wasted no time in showing off his cricket skills, which captured social media by storm.
Back to deuce. From there, it all began to change.
He saved a match point at 4-5 when Federer missed a forehand, then broke to serve for the third set.
Federer won the first two sets of the match, before Anderson claimed sets three and four.
“Even if it will be probably a tough day for him because he had a lot of chances to win the match, match point, two sets to love”.
How hard was it to see this coming? But there was more.
Rafael Nadal is in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon for the first time since 2011.
Federer is a ideal 12-0 in Sets thus far and a flawless 4-0 in Matches at Wimbledon 2018.
“Beating Roger Federer here at Wimbledon will be one I remember, especially in such a close match”, Anderson said.
“I kept telling myself that today was going to be my day”, the 32-year-old said after the biggest win of his career.
“I’m not sure. That could have been a key”. But his worst? Depends on how you look at it. He made it to the the US Open final a year ago, and he’s firmly established himself as a top-10 player.
Federer, 36, was on a quest for his ninth Wimbledon title and 21st Grand Slam trophy overall. Where once he would have buckled on the big stage against someone like Federer he now relishes the task. “You’re never really safe”. He had brushed aside all four challengers en route to Anderson, including winning the first set of his Round 4 match against Adrian Mannarino in just 16 minutes.
Nishikori, who had won only two matches in 15 meetings with the 12-time major victor, broke for 1-0 in the fourth but was broken straight back.
Ever since then, Anderson has been improving his game with every passing tournament. The 32-year-old African is the highest-ranked player from South Africa.
Anderson, a 2017 U.S. Open runner-up, is now looking good going into the semifinal against either Canada’s Milos Raonic or U.S. competitor John Isner.
Boris Becker said Anderson had played the “game of his life” and, to many, will be known as the man who ended Federer’s run.
Anderson, a three-time All-American at IL, moves onto the semifinals of Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
Nishikori went a break up immediately in the fourth set, but that was not the start of a comeback as Djokovic reeled off four games on the spin which helped send him into the last four.
What an upset. This one had a taste of an easy victory after the first two sets.
That earned a code violation from chair umpire Carlos Ramos. After making it to the fourth round of the Australian Open, an event where he’s dominated historically, Djokovic lost in the first round of several masters events, including the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open. “I don’t think it’s fair but it is what it is”.
Later, Ramos warned Djokovic for a time violation, but that didn’t seem to faze the Serb.
“I was playing tennis”. I felt I was really in the flow of the match.
“I don’t want to stop here”.
‘I’m pleased I’ll be staying there right now’.
