Trump confidant says President had ‘love fest’ with May despite critical interview
Brussels has already begun legislation created to keep the City shackled close to European Union regulation after Brexit, while capitals such as Paris and Frankfurt look to exploit Europe’s leading financial centre’s weakness.
Prime Minister May said they had discussed plans for an “ambitious” trade agreement. The government said that would give Britain “freedom to chart our own path”, though it would mean less access to European Union markets than there is now. They can not actually agree to anything until they leave the European Union. May and added: “I also said that this incredible woman, right here, is doing a fantastic job, a great job”. May had used the Blenheim black tie dinner with political and business leaders to press Trump on the benefits of a free trade deal after Brexit. While there would be “no tariffs on any goods”, the U.K.’s vast services sector will suffer significant disruption. In the interview with the Sun, Trump – who has been a long-time supporter of Brexit – said May had not listened to his advice on how to do a Brexit deal, saying: “I would have done it much differently”. A week that started with a rare show of unity on Brexit by her government then led to two senior ministers quitting within 24 hours of each other and rebels within her own party dismissing her plan as a betrayal of what voters decided in the 2016 referendum.
Daniel Dale, a journalist with the Toronto Star who collates instances of the President not telling the truth, said it was the fifth time Trump lied about predicting Brexit.
Speaking to the Sun, Trump revealed that he’d been warned about the Trump baby blimp that would be flying above Parliament Square, saying: “I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London”. She wanted to go a different route … That will be up to her to say. And that is fine. The European Court of Justice will no longer have jurisdiction in Britain, she says. May of going soft on Brexit and argued that her strategy would keep the country too aligned with the EU.
Of Johnson, he said: “I have a lot of respect for Boris”.
In response, May said the proposal was “delivering on the vote of the British people to take back control of our money, our laws and our borders”.
“I think it’s hilarious”.
Asked if the ex-minister could be in No. 10 one day, he replied: “Well I am not pitting one against the other”.
May’s formal proposals were published on Thursday, but hours later the Sun published an interview with Trump where he appeared to side with the prime minister’s critics.
“This will be a hard negotiation; and I don’t necessarily think that because the British position has become more credible that that’s necessarily the final picture”.
“If the strategy in criticizing Theresa May on her own soil to her home press was to get a better trade deal with the United Kingdom, you have to just look at the facts here”.
In retrospect, British Prime Minister Theresa May might wonder whether this was really the best week for a visit from Donald Trump. In denying a query from CNN anchor Jim Acosta, Trump said that “CNN is fake news”.
