Trump backtracks on comments about Russian Federation election meddling, says he misspoke

It was an attempt at clarification that came after uproarious anger at Trump’s performance in Helsinki.

He settled on a regular target for characterizing his Putin presser as anything less than a success – the media. He had also derided the criticism as “fake news”.

Trudeau’s comments come during one of the most tense periods in Canada-U.S. relations in recent years due to an ongoing trade war that has seen the U.S. impose tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum and Canada bring in retaliatory tariffs on dozens of U.S. goods July 1.

Democrats held a separate news conference Tuesday in which some described Trump’s comments in Helsinki as “treason”.

But in his press conference with Putin on Monday, Trump made other remarks in which he refrained from criticizing the Russian leader. It’s clear that Putin outmanoeuvred the USA president. Brennan says, “It was nothing short of treasonous”.

Trump should have known then this summit was a farce, and when Putin handed him the soccer ball, he could have tried to bounce it off the Russian leader’s head.

The New York Times says Trump’s comments drew “howls of protests from Democrats and some Republicans”, and prompted John O. Brennan, who served as Central Intelligence Agency director under Barack Obama, “to suggest that the remarks warranted Mr. Trump’s impeachment”.

For his “A Closer Look” segment, NBC’s Seth Meyers broke down Trump’s news conference with Putin, saying the president delivered “one of the most surreal performances by a president in modern American history” and “twisted himself in knots to take Putin’s side”.

“This is the first important step towards establishing a political dialogue”, concluded Valentina Matvienko, speaker of the Upper House of the Russian parliament.

Top Democrat Sen. Chuck Schumer of NY, says never in the history of the country has a USA president supported an adversary the way Trump supported Putin.

But he again repeated his claim that there was no collusion between his presidential campaign and Russian Federation and suggested that others may have interfered in the election.

Putin “just said it is not Russian Federation”.

Putin on Monday denied Russian Federation had any role in the election and offered to interrogate a dozen of his country’s nationals who were indicted last Friday in the special counsel investigation.

Standing alongside the Kremlin boss, Trump acknowledged that his intelligence chiefs believe Russian Federation hacked and leaked Democrats’ emails containing politically damaging information about his rival Hillary Clinton.

Hundreds of people also marched through the streets of the Finnish capital, demonstrating against Trump and Putin’s presence in the country ahead of their highly-anticipated summit.

“So, I’m sure by [Tuesday’s] show, later [Monday], may even have a different take on this thing”, Limbaugh said.

Other lawmakers have suggested passing resolutions voicing support for intelligence agencies, or spending more to enhance election security and prevent cyber attacks.

Another senator from Alaska, Republican Lisa Murkowski, said she was “stunned” at Trump’s failure to confront Putin about Russian interference in the elections. “I think that’s an incredible offer”.

In his latest Closer Look segment (embedded above), Late Night host Meyers first focused on some other “disastrous” moments from Trump’s trip overseas, including his decision to walk in front of Queen Elizabeth II (a royal faux pas) at an event in the United Kingdom, and his incoherent answers to journalists’ questions about Brexit.
