Trump ignored advice to confront Putin over indictments
Two letters and an apostrophe. That’s what it all came down to.
The ambassador said Russian Federation is ready to discuss a proposed new meeting between Putin and Trump, Interfax said.
He said it was “the president’s prerogative” to keep his discussions with Putin to himself. However, on Tuesday, Trump claimed that he misspoke on the issue.
The new Time cover imagined the two world leaders as not just “friendly”, but as the same person.
“The letter added, “[But] as we impose necessary and well-justified costs on Russian Federation for its malign behavior, at the same time there is a compelling need to avoid significant unintended damage to our long-term, national strategic interests”.
Mr. Flake and Mr. Coons offered up the non-binding resolution after President Trump stood beside Russian President Vladimir earlier in the week and rejected the findings of US intelligence regarding Moscow’s election tampering.
Later, Trump tweeted that he has “great confidence” in USA intelligence agencies but stressed the need to build strong relations between the nuclear powers.
Trump said he and Putin, who USA intelligence agencies say directed interference in the 2016 USA presidential election, had a friendly rapport.
The problem is that President Trump’s controversial stance on Russian Federation comes down to more than just a few letters. Trump’s public doubting of Russia’s responsibility in a joint news conference with Putin on Monday provoked withering criticism from Republicans as well as Democrats and forced the president to make a rare public admission of error. At the summit, Trump called it “an incredible offer”. He did not do so.
Russian Federation was also seeking to interview Michael McFaul, another Putin critic who was U.S. ambassador to Moscow under President Obama.
“The notion that President Trump would invite a tyrant to Washington is beyond belief”, she said. “Look at all the things that I have done”, the president said.
After arriving Friday at his New Jersey home for the weekend, Trump tweeted: “I got severely criticized by the Fake News Media for being too nice to President Putin”.
Meanwhile, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Trump’s goal was to “redirect” two countries “that’d been on a bad path”.
Trump and Putin held two hours of closed-door talks with no one else present but the interpreters.
While stressing that the talks with Trump had been “very successful and very useful”, Putin pointed out that the Cold War was over and that Russian Federation and the USA must work together to solve problems, including those at the intelligence level.
It has prompted calls for the subpoenaing of the notes taken by the U.S. translator who was in the room at the time and even calls for her to testify before a congressional hearing.
Earlier Mr Trump rejected a proposal by Mr Putin that Russian Federation be allowed to question United States citizens.
The prospect sparked uproar, with U.S. senators voting to block the move.
The White House backtrack came just before the Senate voted overwhelmingly against the idea.
This ordeal was eclipsed Thursday by the announcement that Putin had been invited to the White House for a visit this fall.
In a rebuke to the president, the Senate – controlled by Trump’s fellow Republicans – unanimously approved a resolution expressing congressional opposition to any US officials being questioned with Russian officials.
“That’s going to be special”, he added, prompting laughter from the audience.
Trump’s comments come at the end of a week of headline-grabbing utterances and clarifications about the president’s position on Russian Federation.
“The proposals presented by Russian Federation are now being worked out by the USA side”, the ministry said.
