Trump tweets his campaign was spied on illegally and Federal Bureau of Investigation misled courts
Trump and other Republicans focused on the fact that the agent’s controversial “dossier” alleging links between Russian Federation and Trump’s campaign made up part of the evidence investigators used to obtain a wiretap on Page.
Late on Saturday night, the USA government released a trove of documents pertaining to the warrant obtained under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, or FISA, against Carter Page, the suspected Russian asset and former Trump adviser.
The Justice Department, in a historic move, released a trove of previously classified documents related to the Page wiretap applications on Saturday.
The Republican memo issued in February said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had failed to “disclose or reference the role of the DNC, Clinton campaign or any party/campaign in funding Steele’s efforts, even though the political origins of the Steele dossier were then known to senior DOJ and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials”.
“There, done. That’s an easy footnote, everybody can follow it”, Gowdy continued.
The measure gained new co-sponsors last week after Trump seemed to question the consensus of the United States intelligence community that the Kremlin meddled in the 2016 presidential race.
“And neither has anyone else, or you may rest assured [Rep.] Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) would have leaked it”, Gowdy said.
President Donald Trump took to Twitter Sunday morning to try and hit back against the Justice Department’s release of documents outlining Carter Page’s contacts with Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign.
Tapper pointed out a letter in which Page described himself as an “informal adviser”.
“The FBI believes the Russian government’s efforts are being coordinated with Page and perhaps other individuals associated with [Trump’s] campaign”, the application with the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court said.
The documents were part of officials’ application for a warrant to the secretive foreign intelligence surveillance court, which signed off on surveilling Mr Page and include applications and renewal warrants filed in 2017 after Mr Trump took office. But after reading the warrant application there is little doubt that the government had ample reason to be suspicious.
Indeed. Comey FBI partially relied on an anonymously sourced report from a Hillary Clinton operative (Michael Isikoff of Yahoo news) to get approval to spy on Carter Page.
The October 2016 application to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court named Carter Page, a former foreign policy advisor to the campaign of Donald Trump, according to the documents which The New York Times published.
“They should drop the discredited Mueller Witch Hunt now!” he added. Ask her how that worked out – she did better with Crazy Bernie. Republicans must get tough now.
Actually, the president had a lot more to say about the FISA application than the AP acknowledges.
Former presidential aspirant Rubio disagreed, defending the FBI’s surveillance of Page in a second interview on Sunday with CBS Face The Nation. The claims contained in the dossier are wild and unverified and to date have not been corroborated.
Graham insisted that the surveillance was “not at all” justified.
“The FISA warrant process needs to be looked at closely about Congress”.
A series of memos produced by Steele, known as the “Steele dossier”, which have since become public, relies nearly exclusively on Kremlin-linked sources.
