Toronto Shooting: Family of gunman claims he was mentally ill

An 18-year-old woman who was aspiring to be a nurse and a 10-year-old girl have been identified as the two people killed in the incident.

However, Hussain’s family members said he had been mentally ill for much of his life. The shooter is also dead, the Globe and Mail reports, though it is unclear whether he was shot by police or died by suicide. They said medications did not help him and the interventions of professionals were unsuccessful.

“My heart goes out to the victims and loved ones of the horrific act of gun violence in Toronto”, he wrote in a statement. “We will mourn those who were lost for the rest of our lives”. Toronto police executed a search warrant at Hussain’s apartment in the Thorncliffe Park area.

“As far as we’re aware at this stage based on the state of the investigation, which by the way is led by the Toronto Police Service, there is no connection between that individual and national security”, he said.

“We’ll examine the proposal to see if it can be effective”, he said. “The investigation itself is very fluid, it is very new, it’s going to take some time”.

Social media posts indicate that Fallon recently graduated from high school and was preparing to study nursing at McMaster University in Hamilton.

“She was full of passion and she cared about making a difference in the world and this is a huge loss”.

The motive behind the shooting, rare in Toronto, was also not immediately known.

Saunders added the injured range from 10 to 59 years of age, and their condition varies from minor to “serious in nature”.

All those injured have been taken to local hospitals, among them is a young girl in a critical condition.

Some expressed shock that Greektown was the site of the shooting rampage.

Some hugged, others wept.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter on Monday: “The people of Toronto are strong, resilient and fearless – and we’ll be there to support you through this hard time”.

“I can’t speak to what was in this individual’s mind”.

The SIU said the 29-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been released, later exchanged gunfire with police officers and was eventually found dead nearby.

A witness who was standing near the scene told CTV that he heard about 20 shots and the sound of the weapon being reloaded repeatedly.

She said she was told to run to the back of the restaurant. Her two friends were also shot during the incident and are now in the hospital.

Toronto police tweeted that the shooting occurred in the Danforth and Logan avenues area of Greektown, a busy residential area with restaurants and cafes.

Toronto has long prided itself as being one of the safest big cities in the world.
