U.S. President Trump says ‘tariffs are the greatest’
President Trump on the state of the economy and efforts to improve US trade deals.
In an ironic tweet, Mr Trump mocked his European trading partners.
They warned that new duties would be harmful to USA businesses, especially those that rely heavily on products that only China can provide, with one witness decrying the “blunt instrument of tariffs”.
The full impact of the trade dispute, according to Stanley, has yet to be fully felt by farmers – except when it comes to feed. “And the European Union is going to start nearly immediately to buy a lot of soybeans”, Trump said during the announcement.
He has relied on China’s sizable appetite for USA soybeans – it’s the biggest importer of soybeans in the world – but the 68-year-old said now his crops are caught up in the ongoing trade dispute with Beijing.
“That would finally be called Free Market and Fair Trade!”
Republican Senator Ben Sasse, a frequent Trump critic, said the President’s trade policies recalled a past of perilous economic instability.
Trump and Juncker said the US-EU talks would seek to eliminate tariffs, trade barriers and subsidies for non-automotive industrial goods, and cut barriers to transatlantic trade in services, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and medical products. I have an idea for them.
Sen. Jerry Moran of Kansas says, “When the tariff war is over… how do we get those markets back?”
Trump says a 10 per cent tax on imports of cars to the European Union is too high compared to the 2.5 per cent rate charged by the U.S, and he’s also been critical of the European Union over its US$150 billion trade surplus with the U.S.
Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says the plan will help a broad number of farmers deal with the cost of “disruptive markets” as US trading partners have retaliated for President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imported goods. And a program in partnership with the private sector to create new export markets for American farmers.
Minutes later, at a conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Juncker said that the agreement emphasised the “special” nature of the alliance between the U.S. and the European Union going on to stress that trade between the two parties comprises half of all global commerce.
On Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a billion financial aid package to help them. (Read the full release here.) The Washington Post first reported the $12 billion plan Tuesday.
But other countries will also likely retaliate if the USA imposes tariffs, causing even more economic damage.
“Did Juncker make a commitment to USA on market access to the United States on soybeans?”
“This is a short-term solution that will give President Trump and his administration the time to work on long-term trade deals”, said Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue.
“My message was – they need to be very careful with tariffs on domestic content”, Williams said. “USDA will not stand by while our hard-working agricultural producers bear the brunt of unfriendly tariffs enacted by foreign nations”.
“We agreed that no other tariffs would be introduced as long as we are in the negotiations”, Juncker said during a speech in Washington after his press conference with Trump.
