Spieth momentarily loses cool, shoots 66 at PGA Championship
A 12-under 198 total still left Koepka within sight of his third major title in 14 months, but the two-times U.S. Open champion’s grip on the Wanamaker Trophy had loosened.
Now the final frontier is to win again and it will surely happen if he keeps giving himself legitimate chances such as the one he will have today.
Kisner, Koepka and South African Charl Schwartzel each flirted with the lowest all-time major round of 62 fired by South Africa’s Branden Grace in the third round of last year’s British Open at Royal Birkdale.
Mickelson is also seen as a likely pick by Furyk, who played alongside Xander Schauffele and Tony Finau, two other contenders to make the squad on points or as picks, in the first two rounds.
“I can live with that”, he said Friday after a 4-under 66.
“I don’t really feel from memory that I was ever really in contention on a Sunday at the PGA, although I’ve had some good results”, Scott said.
Finau began this wild ride Friday afternoon with five straight birdies, four of them from between 20 and 25 feet, the shortest one at 12 feet. Players missing the cut and completing the 36 holes will receive $3,100 each.
His speedy 24-footer settled into the hole and two hollered words rose above the roar: “Rock Chalk!”
At times he looked and seemed and played younger than his age on a day when he had to play 29 holes in unbearable heat. “I was giving him crap because he let us down on the back nine with only three birdies”. To be able to come back out this morning and play nicely was good.
“After the Open I wanted to do something different, just change the way I thought I on the golf course and he’s been brilliant so far”. US captain Jim Furyk will then make two captains picks on September 4 and another two on September 10. “He showed a lot of poise”.
The 42-year-old, who only returned to competitive action in November after undergoing spinal fusion surgery in April last year, also holed from six feet on the eighth for his fifth birdie of the round, before a par on the ninth took him to the turn in 31.
A whopping 62 players are under par through two rounds, and the 36-hole cut of 140 is the lowest in PGA Championship history dating to the start of stroke play for the event in 1958.
“Honestly, I haven’t hit it great, up to my standards, these first couple days”, Finau said.
“I’m looking forward to playing on the weekend and competing in a major. I know he’s a little frustrated on the back nine with not making a some of those putts, but made a few on the front nine, and it all evens out”. “I’ve been so in the zone you don’t know where you are or where you’re at”.
Paul Casey’s grip on an automatic Ryder Cup qualifying place after a missed cut left him vulnerable to being overtaken by Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen.
