Chelsea transfer news: Tottenham told to ‘name price’ for Danny Rose
Chelsea have told Tottenham to name their price for defender Danny Rose, according to reports.
Mourinho now has only two front-line full-backs at his disposal since Felipe Luis was sold back to Atletico Madrid and wants Rose to fill the void, with versatile Cesar Azpilicueta able to play at either right- or left-back.
Rose is now fifth in England’s left-back pecking order, behind Manchester United’s Luke Shaw, Arsenal’s Kieran Gibbs, Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand and Everton’s Leighton Baines.
Baba Rahman of Augsburg has been heavily linked with a move but that is yet to materialise, while Galatasaray’s Alex Telles is also rumoured to be an option.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will be prepared to do business at that price but I suspect Daniel Levy will demand a fee well in excess of £20m to sell Rose to a domestic rival.
Rose, 25, was described as the best English left-back in the league last season by his Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino but has never won a full cap despite call-ups to Roy Hodgson’s squad.
However, Rose is seemingly the priority, not least because he will boost Chelsea’s necessary quota of homegrown players, per Kidd.
Arguably Rahman is the player with the greater potential, but Rose seems to be the main target for Mourinho ahead of the champions’ league opener against Swansea City on Saturday.
