War hero and presidential candidate John McCain has died
His father, John McCain Jr., and grandfather, John McCain Sr., were both admirals in the US Navy.
What did McCain’s family say? The victor of that election would serve the remainder of McCain’s term through 2022.

“My deepest sympathies and respect go out to the family of Senator John McCain”, he said. We saw this country as a place where anything is possible – and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way.

The statement went on to say: “Our family is immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the past year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John’s many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers”.
The Navy fighter pilot spent years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam after being shot down while on a bombing mission over Hanoi.
John McCain is greeted by President Richard Nixon 1973 after he spending more than five years in a Vietnamese prisoner of war camp. In 2008, he ran again, winning the nomination but eventually losing the general election to Barack Obama.
The Delaware Democrat called McCain “one of my best friends”.

He served Arizona for more than 30 years on Capitol Hill.
Hillary Clinton said of the late senator: “He was a tough politician, a trusted colleague, and there will simply never be another like him” while Maxine Waters tweeted, “A true American patriot & hero has passed”.
“We have common purposes and common challenges and we live in momentous times”.
McCain was no liberal but he opposed both Trump’s first attempt at a travel ban for six majority-Muslim nations, calling it potentially “a self-inflicted wound in the fight against terrorism”, and the confirmation of Gina Haspel as director of the Central Intelligence Agency because of her refusal to fully disown torture.
“Our country has lost a decorated war hero and statesman … he was one of the most courageous men of the century”, he said in a statement.
