Kavanaugh’s leaked emails seem to contradict testimony on abortion precedent
On Thursday, Democrats picked up that line of questioning without letting on what Harris may or may not know. Sen. John Cornyn, his Republican counterpart, responded with a dig at Booker, saying that “running for president is no excuse” for leaking information.
The third day of the confirmation hearing of the conservative federal appeals court judge selected by Trump for a lifetime post on the high court again was repeatedly interrupted by protesters hostile to Kavanaugh. But he’s not the only person being evaluated.
That has prompted an eye-roll from the Right. Booker’s 2020 persona was one of righteous indignation and idealism. More mysterious questions about the special counsel.
As Chairman Chuck Grassley floundered about in his usual way, trying to defend his document confidentiality process, Democrats lined up to express solidarity with Booker. “There is simply no reason they can’t be made public, I hope they will be before this next round”. “I’ve talked to workers all over my state, all over this nation”. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) risked being expelled from the U.S. Senate by releasing confidential documents to the public.
“If there is a list of names he can be given of the lawyers to whom she is referring, I think that’s fine”, Lee said. “This process has demonstrated an unprecedented level of secrecy and opaqueness that undermines the Senate’s Constitutional duty to advice and consent”.
It turned out to be even more of a political show than it had first seemed.
The emails in question, dating back to Kavanaugh’s time as a lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, had been labeled “committee confidential”, meaning only senators on the Senate Judiciary Committee had access to them.
Napolitano said the more “incendiary” document, however, is one in which Kavanaugh says Roe v. Wade might not be settled law.
Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., is shown during his opening statement at Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing for a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court.
A day earlier, in a dramatic exchange, Booker implied Kavanaugh had been open to racial profiling tactics, citing the email exchange between Kavanaugh and a colleague.
Durbin told Kavanaugh that Burck has “some magic power to decide what the American people will see about your role in the White House”.
The second round of confirmation hearings will begin Thursday.
Kavanaugh stressed the importance of judicial independence and insisted he would not be ‘swayed by political or public pressure, ‘ but declined to answer hypothetical questions on the limits of presidential pardons and whether a sitting president could be subpoenaed to testify. “Or if she jeopardizes national security?”
After answering “with other judges I know”, Kavanaugh was asked if he had discussed the probe with anyone who works at Kasowitz Benson Torres, the NY law firm founded by President Donald Trump’s personal attorney Marc Kasowitz.
“If there’s going to be some retribution against the senator from New Jersey, count me in”, said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, Kavanaugh said, “I don’t recall any inappropriate conversations about the investigation”.
Kavanaugh told Sen. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, he had been unaware of the domestic violence allegations against Rob Porter, who was Trump’s staff secretary, until they were publicly disclosed.
During his confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Kavanaugh addressed the Roe decision, calling it “an important precedent of the Supreme Court that has been reaffirmed many times”. “It’s no wonder they are attempting to attack those who have questioned his record and his views”.
