Dolphins’ Stills encouraged by Nike ad deal with Kaepernick
In a statement, the college’s president, Jerry C. Davis said, “In their new ad campaign, we believe Nike executives are promoting an attitude of division and disrespect toward America”.
Donald Trump Jr has claimed to have “fixed” the Nike advert featuring Colin Kaepernick, by doctoring it to feature the US President instead.
While Nike’s ad has received a lot of positive recognition from athletes including James, Bears outside linebacker Sam Acho and tennis star Serena Williams, it’s also sparked backlash.
“I think it’s awesome they’re stepping up and spreading awareness”, Wilson said. People threatened a boycott on social media, and the company’s stock fell nearly 3%.
Student athletes will no longer wear the brand in response to the company’s new ad campaign.
The spot is expected to air this week during college football and Major League Baseball games, and stream on various music, gaming and other platforms, Nike spokeswoman Sandra Carreon-John said.
Separately, an analysis by Tickertags, a company that tracks the frequency of keywords on social media, found that mentions of “boycott” in conjunction with Nike were falling.
Colin Kaepernick will be back on television this football season. “I stand with Nike, every day, all day”.
The ad led to a flurry of calls from conservatives to boycott Nike. The latest estimates put the value of the media exposure from the campaign at more than US$163 million, according to Apex Marketing Group – nearly four times the US$43 million tallied in the first 24 hours since the ad debuted.
“While it is noble to take a stand on something, it is also commercially imprudent to dash headlong into a very sensitive issue which polarizes opinion”, said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail. Dozens of other players began joining Kaepernick, and he has become a symbol of the dividing lines over race in America.
The proposal is based on the contingency that the players union endorses players standing for the anthem.
Stills, who talks often with Kaepernick, said he senses increasing support for the protesters as their cause is better understood.
