Super-fast Airbus plane could fly 3000 miles per hour
The new jet could fly from London to New York in an hour – opening up the possibility of a transatlantic return journey in a day. That puts Concorde’s time of 3.5 hours to shame, not to mention a conventional A330’s current 8 hour flight time.
Concorde – built by Aerospatiale, a forerunner of Airbus, and British Aircraft Corporation – was the only supersonic passenger airline to successfully enter service.
In addition, Airbus predicts the patented craft will be able to complete trips like Paris to San Francisco or Tokyo to Los Angeles in just three hours.
A patent describes a vehicle powered by three different types of engine – and capable of a vertical climb at take-off. As the Airbus lifts off the runway, it will climb vertically like the Space Shuttle.
When the jet is nearly near the speed of sound, the turbojets would shutter and retract in the aircraft’s belly with only a rocket motor guiding the plan at an altitude of more than 100,000 feet.
Airbus expects it to be powered by various forms of hydrogen stored on board the craft.
Supersonic passenger planes could once again be racing through the skies with Airbus having filed a patent for what could become the “son of Concorde”. Consequently, it was prevented from operating over land.
A total 14 Concordes were produced between 1976 and 2003, all of which flew across the Atlantic.
Five Airbus A350 jumbo jets did stunts in the air thanks to the great expertise of former military pilots.
It couldn’t carry a lot of passengers, around 20, but they say it could be a business jet for the very wealthy. In military trim, the jet could serve as a hypersonic transport for commandos or as a reconnaissance plane like the SR71 Blackbird.
Airbus has also proposed a variant of the jet, which would be armed with high-power electromagnetic pulse weapons, as said by Business Insider. However we suppose as technology advances it only makes sense that our planes start getting faster as well, but until then we suggest you not hold your breath.
