More days of flooding ahead for Carolinas, surrounding states
Officials have warned evacuated residents to stay away.

Hurricane Florence has also impacted the blood supply in the region, as more than 120 blood drives have been canceled in Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
The stations made arrangements before the storm to have fuel available to refill the generators, but flooding in the area has made it impossible to get gasoline to the tower.
“The storm has never been more unsafe than it is right now”, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said at a news conference yesterday.
One road was opened into Wilmington at least briefly, officials said, and items have been brought into the city by big military trucks and helicopters, which also have been used to pluck hundreds of harried people from atop homes and other structures.
Long noted that “recovery is always a very frustrating process for people when they’ve lost their livelihoods, but we’re going to be OK”. In all, about 420,000 homes and businesses in three states were in the dark. About 14,000 people are in shelters, officials said.
After Hurricane Florence made landfall, flash flooding was a significant threat.
In Wilmington, North Carolina, one of the worst affected areas, abandoned cars were left to float in the rising waters on Saturday as residents fled and tried to ride out the worst of the hurricane. “We’re seeing this happen now and the result is not good”, Cooper said.
Property damage from the storm is expected to total at least $17 billion to $22 billion, but that forecast could be conservative depending on further flooding, risk management firm Moody’s Analytics said. “Portions of the Carolinas, mid-Atlantic states, and Southern New England are expected to receive an additional two to five inches of rain.with isolated maximum amounts of eight inches possible”.
The Reesers didn’t want to take chances with Florence, especially since the fire department had to rescue them when Hurricane Matthew flooded their home two years ago. “Yeah, I considered moving, but who is going to buy a house that floods?” he said. ” ‘Cause we don’t run every time this thing happened”.

In Virginia, near state capital Richmond, emergency services said one man died after a building collapsed during severe weather, though it was not clear if that death was directly linked to Florence.
Nearly 500,000 people began the day without power in North Carolina.

By Tuesday, Guy said, “the remnants of Florence will be pushed towards the Northeast, where areas from northern Pennsylvania through central NY towards Boston could pick up some heavy rain”.
