The win for Woods, who is part of the United States team for next week’s Ryder Cup in France, means he is now two short of Sam Snead’s all-time PGA Tour title record of 82.

And having won 106 tournaments around the globe, Woods was quizzed if there was any further room for a 107th victory prize.

“I’ve been saying for a while now, he’s playing easily well enough to win, and it’s just a matter of time”, Rose said.

“I got off to an ideal start”, Woods said.

Horschel shot four-under 66 to finish alone in second place, while Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler each shot the low rounds of Sunday’s play with 65.

Rose started the third round tied with Woods, but not for long. Woods led by five strokes late on, but showed a hint of fragility by fluffing a pitch shot at the par-four 16th, where he failed to carry his ball up the slope.

He would finish with a round-of-the-day 65 for a three-stroke lead over Rose and Rory McIlroy.

It felt so familiar – the roars, the fist pumps, the frenzied scramble to keep up with a leaderboard that was quickly tilting in Tiger Woods’ direction. Yet, there he was doing it again Saturday at East Lake, this time while leading a golf tournament and dealing with an old, but new, set of emotions. Thousands followed Woods down the hill and toward the green on 18, chanting “Tiger!”

McIlroy will play his first tournament in Hawaii in January and base himself in America until July.

It’s a comeback not even Tiger Woods saw coming a year ago, capped by a chaotic celebration that golf hasn’t seen even in the best of times.

While the rules will change for the 2018-19 PGA Tour, there is the potential for a golfer to win the Tour Championship, but not win the FedEx Cup.

The victor of the FedEx Cup will be rewarded with $10 million, while the total purse for 2018 is $35 million.

“But yeah, I’ve won over 100 events as a pro, so there’s quite a few trophies here and there”.

Of course, he hasn’t had a 54-hole lead since the 2013 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Those were often hard and painful days, as Woods endured four back surgeries, underwent treatment for addiction and served almost a year’s worth of probation after a DUI arrest last Memorial Day.

“In March, I didn’t really have a golf swing yet”, Woods said.

“He’s playing against the No. 1 in the world right now, and he wants to show everybody he’s still got it”, Lawton said.

“Look”, he added, “Tiger is a notoriously great front-runner, but if I go out and I play similar tomorrow like I did today, I’ll have no complaints”.

Now, the bigger question of “What’s next for Tiger?” awaits. But the larger response may not come until next April at Augusta.
