Crowd rushes course for Woods at Championship
Here’s a look at Woods locking down the win on the 18th green, which sent the crowd into an absolute frenzy.
Woods was understandably emotional as he closed out the victory he had been threatening over the course of a superb comeback year but was at a loss to explain his celebrations.
They had to feel it, touch it, see if with their own eyes.
“I can’t believe I pulled this off”, Woods said during the trophy presentation. He had not won in 1,876 days. He’s playing so well on a very hard golf course.
Rose, meanwhile, received a $10 million consolation prize in the form of the FedExCup, which is awarded to the victor of the tour’s season-long points race, after a birdie at the 18th gave him a 73 for a share of fourth.
The 42-year-old has 14 major championships.
Rose entered the week ranked No. 2 on the FedEx Cup point list, which meant if he could win at East Lake, he automatically would win the FedEx Cup as well. I’ve had hot weeks and you win, but – you can be in the midst of average play, but this comes through consistency for me.
Woods delivered the flawless ending to his fantastic return from back surgeries with a performance out of the past.
“It was just a grind out there”, the former world No. 1 told NBC moments after his final putt.
“I’ve worked my way back, and I couldn’t have done it without those around me … some knew what I was struggling with, and it was really special to see them [other players] here”.
In March, Woods played a meaningful Sunday round when he finished tied for second at the Valspar Championship.
Sports fans have waited a long time for Tiger Woods to return to the top of the golf world – five years, to be exact. Dustin Johnson (67) finished alone in third, four back.
Although Woods had not won a tournament before Sunday’s win at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, he had two runner-up finishes and six top 10 finishes in 17 events. But the day, the galleries and the TV ratings belonged to Tiger.
Less than a year ago the 14-time Major victor found himself at 1,199 in the world rankings after having spinal fusion surgery.
Woods will form part of the United States side for the Ryder Cup in France from Friday.
He held a three-shot lead at the beginning of day four, which stretched to five before a couple of late errors.
A week before the Masters in April, Woods announces that he requires back surgery, forcing him to miss the year’s opening major for the first time since 1994.
