Make-or-break Senate hearing day for Kavanaugh, accuser
In interviews with the Senate Judiciary Committee, two men have disputed Christine Blasey Ford’s recollection of a sexual assault in 1982, saying they had the alleged encounter with Ford, not Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Kavanaugh, who has denied all allegations, also faces sexual misconduct accusations from two other women.
The hearing will be the first time the country sees and hears from the 51-year-old Ford beyond the grainy photo that has been flashed on television in the 10 days since she came forward with her contention.
After Ford shared her version of the alleged assault, examiners applied three separate numerical scoring systems to the polygraph test results.
Collins said senators should hear from Judge.
The Judiciary panel’s 11 Republicans – all men – were letting Rachel Mitchell, a veteran sex crimes prosecutor from Arizona, ask their questions. “My responsibility is to tell the truth”. Earlier in a press conference Thursday, Trump said he would consider withdrawing Kavanaugh’s nomination if he “thought he was guilty of something like this”. In the schism between the criminal justice analogy and the job interview analogy, “the one you embrace seems highly correlated with your political views”, said Somin, a libertarian whose expertise combines constitutional law and popular political participation.
The Supreme Court nominee has been “incandescent” – as in extremely angry – according to one person involved in his preparation. “I am innocent of this charge”.
Kavanaugh defiantly denied allegations he sexually assaulted Christine Blasey (BLAH’-zee) Ford when they were high school students.
Mr. Grassley’s team did agree to ask photographers not to approach Ms. Blasey Ford at the witness table, but instead to remain a distance away.
Ms Ford has claimed that Mr Kavanaugh tried to remove her clothes and clamped a hand over her mouth at a party when both were in high school.
Regarding other allegations – some of which have been anonymous – that have come to the committee since Ford came forward, Kavanaugh has called some of them “ridiculous”, his supporters tell CNN.
“She reiterated that she wanted this confidential”, Feinstein said. But the conservative jurist is facing allegations of sexual misconduct from other women as well, forcing Republican leaders to struggle to keep support for him from eroding.
The letter sent to Gardner accused Kavanaugh of violent behavior while under the influence of alcohol during his time working for the investigation led by Starr into then-President Bill Clinton.
“The details about that night that bring me here today are ones I will never forget”.
He’s said to be seething about the slow Republican-set pace of the Kavanaugh proceedings and suggested at the United Nations that he might have preferred to hold votes on the confirmation even without hearing from Ford. That’s the year when Ford says she believes the assault occurred.
Ramirez told The New Yorker that during a drinking party when they were students at Yale, Kavanaugh exposed himself to her. Ramirez initially was reluctant to characterize the judge’s role, but she said that after six days of assessing memories, she was confident he was the one who took down his trousers.
Sen. Jeff Flake, a Republican member of the Judiciary panel who could be a key vote, had his own take.
Blasey Ford said she was finally able to escape and rushed out of the house with an “enormous sense of relief” that the teens did not follow her.
She gave details of how information surrounding the incident, including her name and that of Kavanaugh, became public, saying that she “struggled with a awful choice” when trying to decide whether to release her account of events when the press reported Kavanaugh’s confirmation was virtually certain.
