This new Tiger Woods is having the same old Ryder Cup problems
Fleetwood, a long-haired, bearded Englishman, has been nicknamed by some fans “Ryder Cup Jesus”.
SAINT-YVELINES-EN-QUENTIN, France-The 12 players that the USA took to France for the Ryder Cup represented its best hope for winning here in a quarter-century.
The best player of his generation, perhaps of all time, added to the most confounding record in golf, losing all three team matches he played this week at Le Golf National to the unstoppable freight train of Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood, who have become known to the Parisian masses as “Moliwood”.
Rahm pulled Europe back to within one, and gave an animated fist-bump after another birdie at the next, only for an ice-cool Thomas to halve it and cup his ear to a baying crowd.
Woods has failed to win seven consecutive matches, dating to his singles victory against Molinari in Wales in 2010.
Meanwhile, Europe captain Thomas Bjorn is delighted with the lead his side has built.
“We got the momentum in the morning, out 3-1”, he said.
It wasn’t enough to get it to the 9-7 number they probably needed, but the U.S.is still hanging on.
The only other time that has happened was four years ago, when then-U.S. Captain Tom Watson sat him out the entire Saturday. “We had a talk about it [with the team]”.
As for Sunday, he is confident that the American team can spring a shock comeback.
“It’s incredible. I’m at a loss for words”, said Hatton. “I’ll be honest, I’d do it again”.
Leading the field coming into the final day this morning, Woods got off to a flier with a birdie on the first hole, aided by competitors Justin Rose and Rory McIlroy dropping shots. I think his style of game lends itself very well for Foursomes. It’s probably in my list of top three worst nightmares in golf.
“I have so much confidence in Phil in his ability to take a young player like Bryson and help him out”, Furyk said. Wish we could have done a better job, especially being two up.
“We’re really, really, really happy with how it’s gone these past two days”, Bjorn said. “We are well aware of what’s standing across on the other side. We have to regroup and we look to [Sunday], and I would never get ahead of myself in this”.
‘When you lose a point, you feel like you’re contributed but you’re contributing to the wrong team.
Sergio Garcia and Rory McIlroy led off and were dominating at three-up through 15 holes against Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau in the opening match.
Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines – Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari made history on Saturday by becoming the first European pairing to rack up four wins from four at the Ryder Cup. Jordan Spieth is definitely up for the fight. Things had been going well for the Irishman, who had won his morning fourball with Sergio García and was two up after two holes playing with Ian Poulter in the afternoon against Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth until he appeared to be provoked by a spectator about his putting. It was a poor choice to hide Reed and play Woods three times during the pairings section of this competition.
“We were solid, and just started riding that wave again on the back nine when Fran started playing great”, said US Open runner-up Fleetwood.
