Pixel 3 and 3 XL launch: any surprises are on the inside

But just what are these devices we’ve seemingly known everything about for the last couple of months?

Google’s free Android software operates most of the world’s smartphones. They do offer dual front-firing stereo speakers for pumping out sound without headphones, though, and Google says that these speakers are 40 percent louder.

Google (goog) product management director Kan Liu, however, contends that tablets still represent “a huge market” that’s “second only to phones”. It will automatically capture alternate shots when you take a picture so you can “fix” a picture if someone blinked or sneezed.

But what about this years? But if youre going to buy a Pixel 3 or 3 XL, you might want to just grab the Pixel Stand instead – thats Googles official wireless charger.

To answer that question, we’re looking at the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, which is a similar size and not much more expensive to start. The phone’s back uses a proprietary process to put a matte finish on a glass back, and it’s fabulous. On the inside, Google’s device is powered by a 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with Adreno 640 graphics, a Pixel Visual Core image processing chip and Google’s Titan M security module. They have 4GB of RAM and no microSD storage card slot. You know the drill.

There are no clear winners when it comes to user trust, but it’s safe to say a smart home device without a camera is less creepy than a device with a really good one. There is a 12MP rear-facer on both handsets, while facing forward are two 8MP cameras. The improved Chrome OS interface shows that Google is ready to close the gap with Windows, by creating an experience that’s well, a lot like Windows. As before, Google’s phone cameras are so interesting purely thanks to its AI-driven software.

That’s not all – this year you can also count on even more assistance across apps, including Gmail’s Smart Compose, now available for mobile on Pixel 3.

Google’s first two Pixels featured powerful cameras that led its appeal among consumers as much as the full native Google suite of apps. While it’s true we got a glimpse of majority ahead of time thanks to copious leaks (which Google themselves lightly poked fun at during the opening segment), it was still fun to see them in action.

“If you have a Google tattoo on you, then these are the phones for you”, IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said of the Pixel’s limited appeal so far. Not bad, if not a tad worrying. “You can decide whether to pick up, send a quick reply, or mark the call as spam”. It’s also got some special features when your Pixel 3 XL is charging on the stand, like an ambient light mode that mimics the sunrise before your alarm goes off in the morning and the ability to show your schedule, traffic info, and news. The Pixel Slate accessory has four pogo pins through which all the data transfer happens.

The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are available in Just Black, Clearly White, and Not Pink color options. To that end, Google has built a few security measures into the Pixel Slate. Unfortunately, only time can tell on that.

The Pixel 3 will be available October 18 and sell at prices starting at $799. Google’s Playground will bring new interactive augmented reality characters and objects to throw into your photos, including some favourites from Marvel and a dancing Childish Gambino.
