Star Trek’s original Uhura is going on a NASA mission
Nichols has been an official ambassador for NSA since the 1970s, utilizing her fame as Star Trek’s communications officer to recruit minorities and women into the organization. The reflecting telescope, housed in the aircraft’s fuselage, is over 8 feet in diameter. Now the 82-year-old actor has confirmed during a recent Reddit AMA that she in fact will be working with NASA, not in some Star Trek-like deep space mission, but to be a participant on NASA’s latest airborne telescope, SOFIA.
As the Inquisitr previously reported, Nichols announcement comes just months after she suffered a mild stroke, which resulted in hospitalization. Her groundbreaking role as Lt. Uhura undoubtedly factored into that opportunity.
