Beltre Hits For Cycle, Rangers Top Astros 12 — Rangers News
Adrian Beltre made history on Monday night.
Beltre accomplished what only three others in history have done, hitting the third cycle of his career and doing so by the fifth inning. Any hope was lost when Gattis was called out on a 3-2 pitch that was just above his ankles for the second out in the ninth. He first did it with the Mariners on September 1, 2008 and then again on August 24, 2012 as a Ranger. He becomes the first player to hit for three career cycles since Babe Herman did it with the Cincinnati Reds in 1933. Starter Colby Lewis was charged with seven runs on ten hits including three long balls through six innings. He has a 2.57 ERA for 21 innings during his current three-start run, which includes a win at Houston on July 18. The third baseman also had a two-run triple in the first inning, a double in the second and a single in the third against AL West-leading Houston.
It’s been an up-and-down season for Beltre, who injured his thumb in June and has been experiencing with bat grips ever since.
Texas had 15 hits, with five players having at least two RBIs and eight scoring runs.
RANGERS: CF Delino DeShields, 2B Rougned Odor, DH Prince Fielder, 3B Adrian Beltre, 1B Mitch Moreland, LF Josh Hamilton, RF Shin-Soo Choo, SS Elvis Andrus and C Bobby Wilson.
Gallardo, winless in his last six starts, gave up five runs in six innings Thursday in a 7-6 win over the New York Yankees and remained with the Rangers after Friday’s trade deadline. Fiers struck out six.
One unique aspect of Beltre’s third cycle was that it was his third cycle at Globe Life Park. The last American League team with multiple cycles in the same year was Minnesota in 2009.
Fresh off sweeping Washington, the Mets won their fourth in a row and moved a game ahead of the Nationals for the division lead.
Cespedes, acquired last week from Detroit, played for the third time with the Mets and tied the team record for doubles in a game.
Tom Koehler (8-8) was tagged in the Marlins’ most-lopsided loss of the season.
Nick Ahmed homered and had four hits as the Diamondbacks improved to 5-2 on their 10-game, bi-coastal road trip. But at 36, he has an outside shot at 3,000 career hits.
Padres 13, Brewers 5: Yangervis Solarte had his first multihomer game, and Tyson Ross pitched six effective innings to lift San Diego.
Conor Gillaspie hit a go-ahead two-run homer off Corey Kluber in the sixth and stayed ahead for good.
The Astros now have two grand slams on the season. It was the 12th home run surrendered by Price in 10 career starts at Rogers Centre. Beltre hit for the cycle during the game.
Jace Peterson led off the Braves 12th by reaching on a throwing error by shortstop Brandon Crawford. Corporan was sore when he took Sunday off after consecutive games.
Tampa Bay’s Mikie Mahtook singled with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to drive in Logan Forsythe and give the Rays a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. Sam Freeman came in and delivered for the Rangers, retiring the two batters he was scheduled to face.
