American lion hunter Jan Casimir Seski ‘did not break law’
Visitors arrive at Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park. Zimbabwe authorities are accusing him of killing a lion with a bow and arrow in a restricted area over the weekend. Sithole is cooperating with the police investigation.
“The process for him would be that he would be arrested, he’d be brought to a local court and, at that point, instead of waiving extradition he could contest it and he could say there is some defect in the process”. There are also reports Seski paid to kill the animal.
The AP knocked on Seski’s door and left a message with his answering service but received no immediate response.
U.S. Fish and Wildlife authorities are also looking into Seski’s possible involvement in a deadly hunt.
The killing of Cecil the lion by dentist Walter Palmer reveals just how far some sport hunters will go to satisfy their desire to kill an animal.
Washaya-Moyo said the government was aware of the financial implications of the hunting suspension on the various stakeholders involved in trophy hunting and was therefore appealing to the donor community and well-wishers to assist Zimparks to thoroughly investigate the industry’s operations.
“The arrow was shot quartering into the elephant, penetrated a rib and one lung, lacerated the guts and liver, and was recovered within the intestine”.
The Zimbabwe government is seeking to extradite Cecil’s killer from his home in Minnesota, but there are reports that the US Attorney’s office is considering whether US endangered animal laws were broken.
While select hunting could still be allowed, anyone who wishes to participate in big game or bow hunting must obtain written permission from Chidziya and, in the case of big game hunts, be accompanied by a parks official. His coalition partner, Jericho the lion, was feared dead this weekend, but Zimbabwe authorities say a research project snapped a photo of Jericho on Sunday morning.
Two Zimbabwean citizens were arrested and face charges in the case in which Palmer has been implicated. Meanwhile hunters are coming to each other’s defense.
The country has issued permits for the hunting of 70 lions this year, below the 100 advised by the United Nations’ Convention on global Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Hunter Theo Bronkhorst and game park owner Honest Ndlovu stand accused of hunting the lion without a license.
“He conducted his hunt in good faith and now he is being treated as if he is some criminal”, Sibanda said from his safari area near Zimbabwe’s Hwange National Park.
