Argentine authorities lure whale out of luxury Buenos Aires marina, hope it
The City neighbourhood of Puerto Madero was greeted by a suprise visitor today, when a whale appeared in the Wharf 4 section and caused many people to flock to witness the event.
The small whale, whose species was not immediately confirmed, turned up well off its healthy course – near the docks in glitzy Puerto Madero, the capital’s upscale neighborhood.
As hundreds of curious passersby gathered to watch the whale surface and spout water just off the docks, navy officials tried to lead the animal out of fresh water and back to the sea.
“Its health does not appear to be the best”, Fundacion Cethus president Miguel Iñiguez told the TN television network on Tuesday, adding that the whale appeared to be “skinny”.
Southern right whales migrate toward cold waters of the Mar Argentino area every year, about 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) south of Buenos Aires.
But some experts warned the outlook was grim.
But Mariano Sironi, scientific director of the Whale Conservation Institute in Argentina, told AP he thought it was more likely to be a humpback whale.
“There’s no way to save it. It will beach at some point and turn up dead”.
