Joel McHale Confirms ‘Community’ Has Been Canceled (Again)
The show’s star Joel McHale confirmed that Yahoo has cancelled his comedy series after six seasons between the streaming site and NBC. “But all our contracts were up after six years. All the actors on the show, nearly without exception – their stock has risen significantly and tis’ out of the pay rate that is affordable to make the show”, McHale said. “There is just no enough money to be able to pay for the show”, McHale continued.
A rep for Sony would not confirm the news.
Community has been canceled after six seasons.
However, don’t hold your breath for a Community movie to happen anytime soon, because series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon (seen above in the documentary Harmontown, available on Netflix Instant now) is in no hurry to get it off the ground, even if Yahoo wants one now. Paget Brewster, Keith David, Jonathan Banks and John Oliver were also part of the ensemble at various times. So while the budget might not be there for a whole seventh season, perhaps a Community movie that brings back all of the beloved Greendale characters, including Donald Glover as Troy and Yvette Nicole Brown as Shirley would still be ideal.
Community’s appropriately meta sixth season finale, in which “the group imagines what a hypothetical season seven would be like while discussing the uncertainty of life”, according to an official description, aired June 2 on Yahoo. You can not blame them if they want to go on and do something else for a little while.
But as McHale told Metro Weekly, everybody’s scattered to the wind.
The comedy was perpetually on the bubble and fans rallied around #sixseasonsandamovie.
McHale himself continues to host “The Soup” on E! and will appear on Fox’s upcoming “X-Files” revival. Frankly, I’d rather have Harmon working on that show than worrying about a Community movie right now.
