Bike-surfer: Aussie daredevil rides on water in Tahiti
“Riding the wave was the most challenging terrain I’ve ever taken a motorcycle on”, Maddison told GrindTV.
The water-bike was first tested on a 12-kilometre stretch in San Diego’s Mission Bay.
It took two long years for Maddison for building a motorbike capable of riding on open water and how to tackle the “unspoiled” waters of Teahupo’o in Tahiti. Now, this being Tahiti, you’d rightly expect a lot of surf and sand and bikini-clad models, but DC and Robbie’s motorcycling sponsor KTM did something better. After going completely limp and ready to take in a full breath of water, Maddison popped up to the surface and was finally rescued. Speaking to Transworld Motocross, Madison’s mechanic Buddy Morgan said that the output of the bike wasn’t as important as the size of the paddles on the back wheel and the shape and angle of the skis.
What with Robbie Maddison being a riding extraordinaire, it’s no wonder the stunt doesn’t look all that complicated or hard.
“I had this vision a few years ago, it’s been a hard sell, I’ve had dirt kicked in my face”.
I honestly thought that might be the end of my life.
Like his preceding death-defying tricks, he pulled it off. I turned out from the wave and it crashed down behind me, chasing me down.

“It’s the most challenging thing I’ve done to date”. He also called the stunt a “near-death experience”. “Honestly, I really thought that getting the right wave would have been easier (laughs). I could see the helicopter and Jet Skis and had a quick moment to wave my arm so that they could locate me”. Robbie told a magazine that the images and footage are pretty awesome but there are no words to describe the ferocity of the waves.
