Jameis Winston threw three interceptions at practice yesterday
And it was the one blitz period is where he had his most trouble and that’s how it should be for a young quarterback.
Winston at least is aiming high.
Winston is a natural leader, so boisterous and charismatic, but in a way that draws people in rather than turning them away. If the rest of the offense can pick it up as quickly as the signal callers, then big things could be in store for this attack come September. “I need to present them I can actually play”.
The reviews on Winston have been generally positive through camp, and the Bucs have already named him their starter (such that that was a mystery).
“It’s just new”, Winston said after practice. We’re asking him to do different plays every day.
“I’ve never seen anybody study like that”.
“I am making an attempt to get some respect out right here”, stated Alexander, who turned 21 on Monday. That energy, that personality, it’s infectious. You have to find your corrections and make adjustments.
His first two throws were intercepted by D.J. Swearinger and Leonard Johnson and after two completions, his fifth pass was then intercepted by Sterling Moore. He’s been aggressive, assertive, decisive and – perhaps most importantly at this point – willing to learn from his mistakes. “It’s just new. Coming out here excited, you’re going to make some mistakes”. “The thing is to bounce back and to keep moving forward”.
You could tell that in his second year at the helm of the pirate ship, head coach Lovie Smith wanted his team to head into the 2015 season with full force.
“A gunslinger mentality is good”, Koetter said. So that’s the fine line.
“You have to get better every single day”, he said.
And while the Titans rookie hasn’t thrown an interception yet in camp, Winston is having a bumpier ride. Other than that, he made his presence known on the practice field. But he shook off the interceptions. “Based on what we know about Jameis, he’ll be able to bounce back”.
If that sort of on-field tendency is a future indicator, though, Tampa Bay had better prepare for a learning curve.
“You’re not ready to be the starting quarterback if you need a mentor”. It helps me actually view what greatness is.
“We talk about Jameis”, said Smith.
So far, his teammates seem to agree.
“He can be a leader, but he doesn’t have to be a leader all the time. We’ve got guys that have been there”, Smith said. “No one is flawless and that’s the thing about football”. You saw the Ronda Rousey fight. Even good plays you learn.
Smith said Winston needs to continue to work on checking down if his first option isn’t there. Koetter can hardly wait to hear it.
