Netflix to give workers with babies a year of paid leave
But parental leave is a different matter altogether – and the company’s move to make it more generous should be applauded.
The shame is that Netflix employs no one in Australia now, despite launching its service here earlier this year and amassing thousands of subscribers in the country. Less clear is whether Netflix will actually be able to encourage its employees to take more time off when they become parents.
Netflix is now letting employees take an unlimited amount of paid time off after becoming new parents, the company announced Tuesday. Each employee gets to figure it out what’s best for ’em and Their family, And Then With Their works managers for coverage During Their absences.
“We want employees to have the flexibility and confidence to balance the needs of their growing families without worrying about work or finances”. They might choose to return to work part time or to come back full time for a few months and then leave again. Compared to companies that offer limited time off to new mothers or no paid paternity leave at all to new fathers, Netflix’s policy seems to show a commitment to treating their employees equally and fairly. We’ll just keep paying em Normally, Eliminating the headache of switching to state or disability pay.
The policy applies to the first year after a child is born or adopted.
The company detailed the change in policy in a blog post, explaining that new parents will now have the freedom to decide what’s best for them in terms how and when they take off to care for their children. I wholeheartedly agree with Netflix’s assertion a happy home means a less stressed, more productive employee, though I’m not entirely sure how their work-if-and-when-you-want policy is going to play out.
