Wilson, Seahawks agree to terms on contract extension
Quarterback Russell Wilson has signed a new four-year contract extension with the Seattle Seahawks that sources tell ESPN is worth .6 million. That’s an average of $21.9 million per season and whether symbolic or not, that’s a mere $100,000 less per year than Rodgers’ $22 million annually.
Russell Wilson has gone from one of the lowest paid quarterbacks in the the NFL to one of the highest.
That’s fewer years and less money than we are used to seeing star quarterbacks get, but Wilson isn’t missing out. “That’s not my job to kind of do all that. Couldn’t be much better”.
While the team has not yet confirmed the deal, Wilson took to twitter shortly thereafter to voice his joy at finally signing a pact that will keep him in Seattle for the foreseeable future. He’s locked up in Seattle through the 2019 season – the year he turns 31 – giving him the opportunity at another big paycheck down the road.
Wilson essentially passed up the rumored, massive $120-million deal for something smaller with a high amount of guaranteeed money. Rodgers’ deal, for instance, is only 49% guaranteed, and Cam Newton’s monster new contract is only 39.5% guaranteed. Ryan Tannehill signed a six-year, $95.3 million deal earlier this offseason. While Wilson’s deal was the focus, the rookie contract of All-Pro middle linebacker Bobby Wagner is also up after the 2015 season. Wilson’s extension does open the door for the team to franchise tag Wagner instead, as Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports points out. “He’s really competitive. No surprise, right?”
Seattle said goodbye to current Saints cornerback and former Patriot Brandon Browner after winning a Super Bowl, so we’ve seen them make the tough decisions before. What kind of contract do you think he should have got from the Seahawks? He threw a goal-line interception in the final minute of February’s 28-24 title game loss to New England.
