Giants place Panik on DL, call up Tomlinson
Panik has played in 97 of San Francisco’s 104 games this season and is batting.
San Francisco decided to err on the side of caution with second baseman Joe Panik, viewing the decision to place him on the 15-day disabled list as a long-term solution.
Panik has been out of the lineup for two out of the last four games because of lower back discomfort. He missed three games, returned for a game and came away with the same issues. Manager Bruce Bochy said he would rest Pagan until the Giants face a left-handed starter. He was best known for his work up the middle where he committed just nine errors in almost 300 chances. Tomlinson was hitting.316, with a. 354 on-base percentage in 136 at-bats in Triple-A Sacramento.
The Giants called up utility infielder Kelby Tomlinson from Triple A to take Panik’s spot on the roster. 374 on-base percentage and 25 doubles. 307 overall with 43 RBI and 21 stolen bases as Texas Tech’s everyday shortstop. “That was a nice piece of hitting”.
