Greg Bryant will miss entire 2015 season
The Florida American Heritage-Boca-Delray High graduate came to Notre Dame in 2013 as the team’s No. 2 running back, but he took a redshirt because of knee tendinitis his freshman year.
Running back Greg Bryant will not play for Notre Dame this season, coach Brian Kelly announced Tuesday, citing Bryant’s failure to meet expectations.
Bryant remains on scholarship and will practice with the team.
Back in June, it was reported that Bryant would be suspended for the first four games of the year, with the speculation on that punitive matter centering on academics. However, he will not count toward the team’s 105-man or 85-man roster, which must be finalized by Notre Dame’s season opener against Texas on September 5.
Bryant’s father, Greg Sr., confirmed to IrishIllustrated.com that his son was academically ineligible and said he will not report to preseason camp but plans to be on campus when classes begin later in the month.
While the optics of suspending a former big-time recruit aren’t good, there’s reason to think Notre Dame can absorb his absence with the backfield combination of [quarterback Malik] Zaire, Tarean Folston and C.J.
Kelly also announced in the statement that junior linebacker Michael Deeb and junior tight end Mike Heuerman will miss the season after taking medical redshirts.
Bryant played in 12 games last season and ranked second in rushing for the Irish with 289 yards. Both will remain on scholarship and continue to work toward their degrees at the university.
