Android distribution data updated for August, Lollipop usage slowly nearing 20%
After skipping the month of July, Google is back in August with the latest distribution numbers for each version of Android.
As usual, Google gathered is Android OS distribution data by gathering info from all of the Android devices that accessed the Google Play Store app during the 7-day period that ended on August 3. That is up from 12.4% in June, when the numbers were last reported. Jelly Bean, Android 4.1 through Android 4.3, showed up on 33.6 percent of devices, which sees a considerable drop down from 37.4 percent back in June.
The newest statistics show that 15.5% of Android devices are now running Android 5.0, while 2.6% are powered by the latest Android 5.1 version. According to the Android Developer Dashboard, Lollipop is now sitting at a combined distribution of 18.1%.
Leading the pack, however, is KitKat, which is now installed on 39.3% of the devices, marginally up from the 39.2% figure that was reported in month of June.
Next month we’re probably going to see Android 5.1 Lollipop gain even more marketshare as more devices running this particular operating system get unveiled.
Finally, we come to Android 2.3 Gingerbread and Android 2.2 Froyo, which are still barely hanging on.
Ice Cream Sandwich has also dropped by 1% to 4.1% which is interesting as it would seem that Gingerbread is still more widely distributed despite it being older.
