‘Stonewall’ Movie Drops First Trailer
The riots at New York City’s Stonewall Inn are often cited as the beginning of the gay rights movement, and the movie Stonewall intends to take viewers back to 1969 to see its start.
Howard Cohen of Roadside Attractions said: “Roland Emmerich’s Stonewall is an explosive, dramatic story set against one of the monumental events of the twentieth century, The Stonewall Riots”. Clocking in at just over two minutes, this trailer is quite stirring in its depiction of social injustice, so hopefully Stonewall gets the movie it deserves. The film, however, features these characters in supporting roles and invents a new protagonist named Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine), an “all American” cis (i.e. non trans) white man who flees to New York after his parents kick him out for being gay. Danny befriends a group who spend their nights at the Stonewall Inn, a gay-friendly club run by the mafia. With the toss of a single brick, a riot ensues and a crusade for LGBTI equality is born.
The film’s cast includes Jeremy Irvine, Ron Perlman, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Joey King, Caleb Landry Jones, Matt Craven, Atticus Mitchell and Mark Camacho.
“Stonewall” will make its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival in September, with a theatrical release slated for Sept. 25.
In quite the departure for Emmerich, the powerful first trailer for Stonewall has arrived, well known as the highly regarded LGBT rights charity of the same name which only celebrated its 25th anniversary previous year.
