Dani Osvaldo joins Porto
Given his volatile personality, many felt that Osvaldo would struggle to find a new club but it had emerged recently that Portuguese giants Porto were willing to take a chance on the striker and have now taken a huge leap of faith by securing his services on a free transfer.
Osvaldo was a free agent following the termination of his contract with Saints, where he failed to settle. His strong finishing and ability in the air will help Porto replace the firepower they lost in Jackson Martinez.
Osvaldo was suspended for three games by Southampton following a touchline fracas with Newcastle United’s goalkeeping coach in December 2013, before being banned by the club following a training-ground incident.
The 29-year-old moved to Inter Milan on loan in the summer of 2014, and then Boca Juniors in February and his move to Porto makes it five straight transfer windows in which he has changed clubs.
It would not be an exaggeration to state that Dani Osvaldo has been one of Southampton’s worst ever signings in their history.
He left Roma under a cloud after throwing a tantrum when he was left out of the starting lineup against Lazio in the Coppa Italia final.
Since 2005, Osvaldo has played for a remarkable 12 clubs in his senior career and has plied his trade with seven Serie A sides.
But, having said all that, they need goals.
Osvaldo proved to be a disruptive influence during his time on the south coast and will now aim to kickstart his career in Portugal.
