Pakistan’s Ex-Cricket Captain Says He Escaped Gun Attack
Police said Akram was not the intended target but was lucky to escape the bullet.
The incident took place near National Stadium where the two gunmen arrived in a motorcycle and first fired at his auto and later opened fire at him when he walked out of the vehicle.
Akram’s vehicle met with an accident on Karsaz Road near National Stadium.
Speaking to media, DIG East Police ruled out the possibility of targeted attack saying “it is a classic case of road rage”.
Wasim Akram’s vehicle was attacked by unknown assailants in Karachi on Wednesday. “We have identified the auto from CCTV footage and will have the suspect in custody in a couple of hours”.
Police said the information was being collected about the incident.
Akram also told the police that he had not received any threats. “If he can do it with me, then you can imagine what he would do with the common man”, Akram said. He explained that one of the riders emerged out of his vehicle and opened fire.
Akram spends most of the time commentating on cricket from various venues around the world. “It was not an act of terror or attempt on life of the former player”, he added.
He retired from playing in 2003 and is now running a Pakistan Cricket Board fast bowling training camp at the National Stadium.
The great left-arm paceman took 502 one-day wickets and claimed 414 Test victims in a 19-year worldwide career.
