Former Clippers Owner Donald Sterling Files For Divorce From Wife
Donald Sterling has filed a petition for divorce from his wife of almost 60 years, Shelly.
Sterling attracted significant media attention last year when a female friend recorded him making racially insensitive remarks and then released it to the media.
Following her victory in probate court, Shelly Sterling sold the team to Ballmer, the former Microsoft CEO, for $2 billion. Donald Sterling, essentially, has received nothing yet from the sale because he’s still suing the league and Shelly. It was originally rejected by the courts because it was incomplete, but Sterling’s attorneys said the paperwork was corrected and re-filed.
They also clashed, with Donald Sterling criticizing his wife from the witness stand, and later during an outburst, calling her a “pig”. “A billion is a lot of money”.
“It’s clearly an unfortunate situation”, Samini said, “but my client can’t continue to sit by while his rights are trampled”. The Sterlings, who made a fortune buying apartment buildings across Los Angeles, presented a mostly unified front at trial, despite their other conflicts. Representatives for Shelly Sterling did not immediately return requests for comment.
The National Basketball Association banned Sterling for life and fined him $2.5 million.
The filing comes two weeks before the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary and four months after an American judge ordered V. Stiviano, who Shelly claims is her husband’s mistress, to surrender a $1.8 million house and to pay Shelly Sterling $800,000 that Donald Sterling spent on Stiviano in cash and luxury cars. The date of separation is listed as August. 1, 2012, though Shelly Sterling said the couple never separated despite marital issues.
