Train without passengers derails at Smithsonian station, no injuries
Requa did not give a timetable as to when the situation might be resolved, but warned passengers that it could affect their evening commute home.
Stessel says there were no injuries; only the operator of the train was on board.
A train has derailed at the Smithsonian Metro station. “Whenever we have this kind of a service disruption downtown, there’s really no way to run trains as frequently as we would normally run them, and that’s where folks start feeling that crowding, and that slow going”.
The Smithsonian and Federal Triangle stops are closed, and all Metrobuses in D.C. will provide free transportation for passengers affected by the derailment, according to the release.
Train service is now suspended between Federal Center and McPherson Square.
Silver Line trains will operate between Wiehle-Reston East and East Falls Church only to reduce congestion downtown.
Riders will experience significant delays on the Blue/Orange/Silver lines and should consider alternate travel options this morning.
As D.C. residents searched for alternate ways to get to work during rush hour, some commuters tweeted their frustration with the derailment.
Service along some bus routes, including the X2, has been affected because Metro pulled out buses to serve as shuttles between Metro stations.
Metro also reported an unrelated problem on the Red Line.
